Politics are at best a necessary evil. They exist not as an end in themselves, but as a means of strengthening and uniting the civic ties that bind us as a people and a nation.

DeVos's School Choice Program Enable Corruption...
Yesterday, the former education secretary of Puerto Rico, Julia Keleher, returned to the island to stand trial after being arrested by the FBI on July 10th on fraud charges. Specifically, she and a government official in the insurance sector have been charged with using their government positions and connections to misdirect federal funding and award bloated, fraudulent contracts to their personal connections (several of whom were also arrested on the 10th). Some see this as vindication for the Trump administration, which has cited potential misuse of funds as one of their reasons for repeatedly trying to hold back much-needed funds, most recently funding for food stamps. However, this alleged fraud actually has more to do with policies of reducing public school funding in favor of private and charter schools, a shift made popular by Education Secretary Betsy DeVos. https://www.forbes.com/sites/christopherrim/2019/07/17/did-betsy-devoss-school-choice-program-enable-puerto-ricos-corruption-scandal/?utm_source=FACEBOOK&utm_medium=social&utm_term=Valerie%2F&fbclid=IwAR1XXTLBmfln5vXQnpGiwSSBeTl8Nc5EdAKJlxMNR1_zkPsHf_Oc-4VRo5c#2ca7d5295526

WASHINGTON (AP) — Reality star and activist Kim Kardashian West took a star turn at the White House on Thursday to promote efforts to help those leaving prison get jobs and stay on track. “Everyone wants the community to be safe, and the more opportunity we have and that they have and the support that we help give them, the safer everyone will be,” Kardashian West told an East Room crowd. She announced a ride-sharing program to help former prisoners get transportation to job interviews, work and other events.https://www.huffpost.com/entry/kim-kardashian-announces-ride-share-program-to-reduce-recidivism_n_5d02bd4ae4b0dc17ef06b27a?section=politics&utm_campaign=hp_fb_pages&ncid=fcbklnkushpmg00000046&utm_medium=facebook&utm_source=women_fb&fbclid=IwAR2ZnNyUY8acelthii1-wjPZ6A5-Z8wrkYh8x72Cy6v7HZLuWRFFA06npCI

Would you throw a divorce party?
We have ceremonies and rituals to honor nearly all major life passages. We hold a baptism or bris on one side of life, a funeral on the other. We have birthday parties. Graduation dinners. Weddings. But there’s no official rite of passage during divorce. Until now. Increasingly, people are seeking a way to honor their marriage, even as they end it. Some people plan a public ceremony or blow-out bash, hosted alone or with their ex. Others want a private moment. Many people say taking a trip out of town was the act that let them head in a new direction when they returned home.https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/splitopia/201706/should-you-throw-divorce-party

Cuddle therapy to cure loneliness
Loneliness refers to the difference between the amount of social contact and intimacy you have and the amount you want. It's about feeling isolated, like an outcast. (That said, the opposite of loneliness isn't popularity either - you can have dozens of "friends" and still feel lonely. True intimacy and feelings of relatedness are much more about the quality of your relationships than the quantity.) Persistent loneliness is not only emotionally painful, but can be more damaging to our physical and mental health than many psychiatric illnesses. For instance, lonely people sleep poorly, experience severe depression and anxiety, have reduced immune and cardiovascular functioning, and exhibit sings of early cognitive decline that grow more severe over time.https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-science-success/201010/the-cure-loneliness

U.S. Food Waste Crisis
There are two sides to it: the production stage and the consumption stage. In the production stage, some foods do not enter the food chain for many reasons relating to farmers, supermarkets, pests, and climatic conditions. Supermarkets are usually fussy about the quality of food from farms. They often reject odd looking and unusually sized produce. However, they seem to forget that with the unpredictable weather and the pesky pests, it is almost impossible to grow the perfect produce. Food waste at the consumption stage includes food going out of date and leftovers due to too much food. In households, food waste consists of mostly fresh fruit and veg, and bakery products such as bread and cakes. https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/the-food-waste-crisis_us_595ce3fde4b0f078efd98d65

Gandhi's celibacy test : sleeping with naked women
The Indian historian Ramachandra Guha has launched the second volume of his two-volume biography of Mohandas K(Mahatma) Gandhi, a magnificent achievement that, in Guha’s words, has taken “30 years of unsystematic interest and 15 years of obsessive foraging”. At a talk last week at the London School of Economics, he was passionate and amusing, and it was uplifting to hear his respect and affection for one of the great moral figures of the last century. The questions from the audience mainly concerned Gandhi’s role in the independence movement and his attempts to heal India’s religious and social divisions. But then – a last question – a young woman wondered about a strange episode in Gandhi’s life that she found “unsettling”. In reply, Guha went further; it had been “inexplicable and indefensible”. Advertisement For several decades after his death, this episode was not widely known. Popular accounts of Gandhi’s life, including Richard Attenborough’s biopic, never mentioned it. The facts are that after his wife, Kasturba, died in 1944, Gandhi began the habit of sharing his bed with naked young women: his personal doctor, Sushila Nayar, and his grandnieces Abha and Manu, who were then in their late teens and about 60 years younger than him. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/oct/01/gandhi-celibacy-test-naked-women?CMP=fb_gu

How to Spot an Energy Vampire
Have you ever had the experience of having the life sucked out of you by spending time with a particular person? I’m talking about feeling exhausted, bored, irritated, stressed, anxious, threatened, overwhelmed or depressed after just a few moments in that person’s company. There may have been times where you felt guilty for having negative thoughts about that person — which made you feel even worse. You may even have thought there was something wrong with you, such as feeling a headache coming on or stressing over a work deadline. Either way, you didn’t understand why you felt so out of sorts. If that describes a familiar experience, chances are you have been in the company of an energy vampire. https://psychcentral.com/blog/how-to-avoid-being-drained-by-energy-vampires/

How to fix a broken heart | Guy Winch
Imagine if we treated broken hearts with the same respect and concern we have for broken arms? Psychologist Guy Winch urges us to rethink the way we deal with emotional pain, offering warm, wise, and witty advice for the broken-hearted. Real heartbreak is unmistakable. We think of nothing else. We feel nothing else. We care about nothing else. Yet while we wouldn’t expect someone to return to daily activities immediately after suffering a broken limb, heartbroken people are expected to function normally in their lives, despite the emotional pain they feel. Now psychologist Guy Winch imagines how different things would be if we paid more attention to this unique emotion—if only we can understand how heartbreak works, we can begin to fix it. http://www.simonandschuster.com/books/How-to-Fix-a-Broken-Heart/Guy-Winch/TED-Books/9781501120121
