Think outside the trash, RECYCLE!

I started Up Shift Recycling in 2010 and has grown it to one of the largest recyclers of electronic waste. A “recovering lawyer”, I am a graduate of the University of Western Ontario in a combined LL.B. and Honours Business Administration. My goal is to build a great international organization that is the company of choice for local, national and international: e-waste collection; IT value recovery; data destruction; useable parts and item trading; end-of-life e-waste processing; and e-scrap trading services. When not recycling electronics (which doesn’t happen often), I can be found exploring the world with my husband and daughter.

Releasing balloons into the sky is actually really bad for the planet. Balloon litter has negative impacts on birds, sea turtles, & other wildlife. And balloon litter is the #1 type of litter found on remote island beaches in Virginia. Hear from the experts. If you celebrate with balloons,"Pop 'em and Drop 'em" in the trash after your event. Never let them go!

I haven’t seen a balloon release in years because everyone knows they’re terrible for the environment.

While I agree the balloons are bad, I think the cigarette butts thrown EVERYWHERE are more of an issue. At least with balloons someone’s mouth hasn’t been all over the part you have to touch to pick it up.

My daughter from young used to say that she didn’t want to let her balloon go as it would hurt the birds

Wow!! I am someone that always loved the symbolism with the release of balloons. I have been educated. Thanks for the lesson.

Can't stress this enough, please don't release balloons for any reason. Plant a tree to commemorate someone instead.

I have known about this for a long time and despair when I see people still do it, so I'm sharing to create awareness for the good of the planet.

A lot of interesting comments. If you’d like to be a part of the solution, then contact your city council and explain to them why the practice should be banned in your city. Educate others about it and about being good stewards of the earth. Just don’t litter. I make it a practice to pick up a few items of trash here and there to help with cleanup. If millions of people picked up just a few pieces here and there, it adds up.

People shld be aware the consequences of their actions to the environment. The effects of their actions will get back to them and will haunt them thru the generations to come.
