In 1983, China’s first school for the elderly opened. Since then, 70,000 more have cropped up across the country. They offer courses in pursuits like dancing, online shopping or English for would-be-travellers, as well as in more traditional academic disciplines. Last year these universities enrolled a combined 8m students—just over 3% of China’s cohort of over-60s.

educating seniors makes practical sense: it helps to improve memory and to fight loneliness, which damages health and drives up suicide rates. It is also in line with Confucian thought, which teaches that learning is a lifelong virtue.

You have to love the old people in China. In every city of China, the old people will gather at twilight and practice dancing in the public squares. Some residents started complaining that these groups played their music too loudly and were a nuisance. The Chinese government being the way it is, decided to step in and regulate the dancing of old people throughout China. Shortly after they instituted the regulations, 2 weeks to be exact, they repealed the regulations due to the furor of the old people. You can imagine all the households in China. If given a choice between the government and their parents or grandparents, the choice is easy. And the Chinese government knew it and backed down immediately. So, if you ever want to mess with the Chinese government, enlist the old people in China. They will bring the Chinese government to it's knees in no time.

Never too old to learn and, just as importantly, to make school friends.

OH what an amazing country we could live in and leave to our grandchildren if we could get our generation to be as positive and confidant about their potential as the Chinese, using gardening and sewing skills for planting and using Kenya's bamboos and using our well - hidden brain power in creating and enjoying relevant stimulating courses in our underused and wasted-on-the-young universities

Meanwhile in the UK we are always complaining about too many people going to university. I don't know why a degree or education is seen as a privilege. It's a right not a privilege and it has so many hidden benefits as graduates are less likely to be obese and develop dementia.

is done here in United States. All you have to do is enroll to Adult Education in your city. I retired at age 62 due to medical reasons. That did not deter me to attend schooling and took computer lessons. It was a past time for me . . . A perpetual student. So I finished all the words, excel, photoshop, PowerPoint, and access. . . beginner and advance. Oh include Quickbook . . .beginner and advance. We create our own time and space. We are not different from China. US are very innovative and an inspiring place to live in and for the elderly.

Brilliant idea... if you don’t use it, you lose it... whatever level you are, it’s good to keep the brain cells moving... I’ve always said, I’ll probably do another degree when I retire if I’ve not done another before...
