Environmental Science Should be a Mandatory Class

In this op-ed, Teen Vogue’s Marilyn La Jeunesse argues that environmental science should be a mandatory course taught in public schools around the country. Marilyn was a senior in high school when I first learned that dental floss shouldn’t be be flushed down the toilet. Nor should condoms or tampons. This mind-blowing revelation happened on an Advanced Placement Environmental Science (APES) class trip to the Orange County Sanitation District, where my peers and I were surrounded by the noise of rushing recycled water and the light scent of excrement wafting through the air.

There is no national school curriculum in the U.S., although there are federal laws that mandate state standards in order to qualify for federal assistance. Therefore, it is up to the states and school districts to determine what courses are required in their schools. Seeing as states and local schools have the power to determine their own mandatory curriculum, adding environmental science to the list of required courses would be a relatively simple, but vital addition to every child’s education.

“Whether you live on a corn farm in Missouri or in an apartment in New York City, you are inextricably linked to the natural world,” University of Michigan Earth and Environment Science PhD candidate Sophia Macarewich tells Teen Vogue. “The choices we make every day — the food we eat, how we travel, and the clothes we buy — all have a lasting impact on the environment and a fundamental understanding of [environmental science] is essential to understanding these impacts.”

because people like our president don't believe in climate or they feel it's not important enough to hinder the bottom line of the rich.

In some states, teachers aren’t required to take it as part of their studies and probably don’t feel comfortable teaching it. It is possibly the most important class to take.

Because people and governments don't believe that 8 billion people with the way we live have hastened/ quickened what was an already changing climate as always, into the state it is today. Thousands of scientists have concluded that mankind has helped the balance of this planet towards another extinction. Look outside. Go outside and be with nature. Then you will get it when I say in my 50 years of memory that greedy corporations have been taking and polluting this planet every second of every day. They also lobby politicians to look the other way. So, education on the facts and awareness is not good for business. This is their mentality; this is what we need to change and all business needs to be green.

Because it has reached away from science and become an emotional issue.

I am the head of an amazing high school and we have made environmental management a compulsory subject. Our students love it and feel like they are more in touch with the world around them. Motivate that your school does the same!
