I do this almost nightly. Laying in bed, I start at my toes and I literally think of every single body part one at a time, working my way up to my head. And I mantra over and over"relax the toes, relax the toes...." making the muscles mentally turn into fluid. I am almost always asleep before I get to my shoulders.

It is called wake up insanely early and not go to sleep until very late. Also drink energy drinks like water. By the time you can go to sleep you will have been up way more then most people ever will and have had multiple caffeine crashes.

What if my feet never touch the floor so I can’t relax them against it? This isn’t for short people.

So basically allowing yourself to fall asleep while meditating. I can do that.

The only military tricks I'm awake of is lots of strenuous physical activity, going to bed late and waking up early. Do that long enough and you can sleep anywhere, anytime.

Being completely and totally exhausted after standing watch or other non-civilian"shift" at work probably helps.

Closing your eyes and thinking of marshmallows is a good place to start. I can fall asleep in 30 seconds.

Hardly a ‘military trick’ it’s a basic visualization and relaxation exercise. Notwithstanding it’s good to see the military catch up with techniques that work.

It's called progressive muscle relaxation if you want to look ut up. Or the Calm App has sleep stories that will do the same thing.
