Depression is the inability to construct a future.

I gained my PhD in translational cognitive research in at Cardiff university. After a post doctoral position investigating the neural substrates involved in fear and anxiety, I transitioned to industry and spent the next 14 years at Eli Lilly. My work included efforts to understand the neural circuitry underpinning behavioural endophenotypes associated with Psychiatric and Neurodegenerative disease. I have had a leadership role in a major EU-funded IMI (Innovative Medicines Initiative) project on biomarkers for Alzheimer’s Disease. I also sit on the government scientific advisory committee on the use of animals in scientific research. I hold a BSc in Anatomical science from Bristol university, a MSc in Neuroscience from Oxford university and a PhD in Psychology awarded by Cardiff university. In my (limited) free time, I enjoy getting outdoors and running. I like nothing more than a new challenge and in the last year has completed my first marathon, three half marathons, and a number of off-road challenge events including Tough Mudder.

Westminster is in chaos, the future is uncertain and there is no end in sight. What toll is the political crisis taking on the nation’s wellbeing? A Britain Thinks poll of more than 2,000 people, the results of which were released this week, found that 83% of those surveyed were sick of hearing about Brexit, while 64% thought it was damaging their mental health. The poll found that the dominant words people use in relation to Brexit have changed: in 2017, it was “confusing” or “uncertain”; now, it is “broken” and “chaos”.

Mental health professionals don’t describe what they see on an individual level as pessimism – rather, a multilayered kaleidoscope running the gamut of emotions from insecurity to rage. Julia Bueno, a therapist and the author of The Brink of Being, says: “This is operating on two distinct levels.” There’s a concrete change, she says, for those whose livelihoods are diminished or rendered precarious by Brexit.

And yet recent, I think the UK came high in a poll of the world’s happiest places so we must be doing something right. Just not necessarily in the right order as the great Eric Morecambe once said.

Time to pull together as a community, holding those political leaders who's taken us down this path accountable. Time to accept the social issues we need to fix are not due to our membership to the EU , but to the political endeavours of so called leaders who put self interest above and beyond their public duties. We need to choose and vote for leaders who cares about how we create a society with compassion, support & opportunities for everyone - the foundation of the NHS & our social welfare came from this. I think this is the true nature of the British public that we need to believe in and revive.

I miss us all being vaguely disinterested in each other, instead of this foaming, seething hatred we now share.

Well if you do something that is an affront to logic an inducement to a blinkered nationalism. How are you meant to feel?

Think you'll find that a huge proportion of the Scottish electorate have never been more optimistic about the future. This English Brexit all but guarantees independence.

Basically because what people have been promised is totally undeliverable. Making frustration inevitable.

When plunder becomes a way of life for a group of men in a society, over the course of time they create for themselves a legal system that authorizes it and a moral code that glorifies it. — Frédéric Bastiat
