How do I stay in the now when it feels unbearable

Often, when we talk at Still Water about the elements that helps us to be mindful, practitioners mention being calm and rested and in a natural space such as the the seaside, the mountains, or a garden. When these elements are present, it is easy to be mindful, and our mindfulness is pleasant and nourishing.

However, we are not always calm, rested, and in a beautiful natural space. Sometimes our whole being seems dominated by unpleasant mindstates, such as tension, sadness, agitation, self-condemnation, or despair. What then?

Just over four year ago, during a Question and Answer session at Plum Village, a practitioner asked a very similar question of Thich Nhat Hanh. “How do I stay in the present moment when it feels unbearable?”https://www.stillwatermpc.org/dharma-topics/staying-in-the-present-moment-when-it-feels-unbearable/

I stay in the present moment by acknowledging the past and embracing the now without judgment. I believe that the quality of our future depends on how we live in the now. Even if you are in pain right now, feel it and don't try to escape it through thinking about the past or the future. What is in the now should be felt and welcomed no matter how unbearable it is.

He gave me the word I had been struggling to come up with when I wake up in middle of night with high anxiety."Embrace" it. That's what I have attempted to do. He did also remind me of needed compassion.

This is correct. As this great teacher says, it will take minutes to transform these feelings. Maybe longer if you are alone. Time is the barrier. If we don’t feel like we have the time and thus feel pressured, it is much harder to do. It’s nice to hear that even unbearable is manageable. If it’s a toothache which is unbearable, than we get medicine. Can an emotional feeling be unbearable? It’s tough to stay with it so we bounce to the future and the past. But we stay with it and give ourselves time to notice it and it will wither away. Just some ideas. Thank you Thich Nhat Hanh.

Accept it. As if you're stranded out in the cold and you have no choice but to accept the cold (by staying present). If you resist, then you will go unconscious.

Stay in the moment? Simply realize it's impossible to ever leave it. Even thought is in the moment, though it's narrative often is not. But even that narrative isn't happening outside of the moment, it's simple describes events outside of the moment, in the moment. But outside of the moment doesn't itself exist.

It's life....we cannot do anything about it but we can experience love all the time if we want to.
