How successful people make small talk

“How are you?” These are the three most useless words in the world of communication. The person asking doesn’t really want to know, and the person responding doesn’t tell the truth. What follows is a lost opportunity and meaningless exchange with zero connection.

But the key to making the most out of small talk, according to Harvard researchers, is to simply ask the other person follow-up questions. In a series of experiments, researchers analyzed more than 300 online conversations and found that those who were asked more meaningful follow-up questions (a.k.a. questions that aren’t “how are you?” or “what do you do?”), found the other person much more likable.

What is your current state of mind? Really? Who would start a conversation like that? Come on folks.

Forget small talk. I prefer to just get the conversation flowing right off the bat and lead with “So, who did you vote for in the last election?”.

Small talk is important because it's like dogs sniffing each other. It's how we greet and make sure someone's safe, mentally stable, can speak the same language we do, etc. It's not supposed to be intriguing or deep talk, but it tells you if someone's acting normal enough to continue into deeper topics. Trust is needed for deeper topics. Asking a stranger for personal information or too deep of info should send up a red flag...establish trust first.

Tired of hearing about Harvard studies &"experts." It's a simple courtesy to ask someone how they're doing.

I prefer to greet people with, “Hey baby, what’s shakin’?”

"How are you?" -- three words that are very useful if someone trusts you, and otherwise a meaningless formality.

No they aren’t. If you MEAN it, they can be the most helpful and caring way of reaching out. Being disingenuous is the most useless thing in communication because you’re not actually interested in communicating.

This question kills me. You start telling and people run away-‘i dint want to hear’. so save yourself time and stop acting polite. Its rude actually to ask and not to sincerely be interested in the other person when they tell you. It's called two faced.

Most folk don’t wait for you to answer and when they do they really don’t want to hear the answer.

People don’t want to hear this, because 9 times out of 10 people rather talk about themselves. Often heard are I, me , I’m , me , I’m ... that’s when I tune out and walk away. People need to stop talking about themselves, stop taking selfies and stop posting about how happy they are with their life’s on FB. Your so happy you need to tell everyone 10 times a day on FB? Come on, what’s really going on?
