Indigenous battle to keep pipeline off their land

Justin Trudeau was in campaign mode this week, striding around a school gymnasium, shirtsleeves rolled up and brow suitably furrowed as he addressed voters’ concerns at one of his annual town hall-style meetings.

A day earlier and nearly 800km away, another face of the federal government was on display as dozens of police – some heavily armed – stormed a makeshift barricade, arresting 14 indigenous protesters and prompting others to flee for safety on snowmobiles.https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/jan/11/canada-pipeline-indigenous-trudeau-treaty

In my opinion, the indigenous people are just defending their right. We should respect what is theirs to avoid any conflict like this.

Very interesting. Canada doesn’t respect their agreements either. We took their land. Told them where they could live. But only until we find a use for it. I was taught your word and a hand shake meant something. Many were not.

Contracts were signed by 23 native bands. This is perfectly legal. This is what democracy is. Not everyone in every band is going to agree. Stomping your feet cause you don't get your own way isn't fair either. You vote in a council to make decisions for everyone. They did!

Not always. Trump promised a wall that Mexico would pay for. He shut down our government. Because congress did not agree American people should pay. He opened the government. But now less then a month, he is threatening to shut it down again. So do you think that is fair. Where did you find proof that any and all contracts we signed?

Guys, do some fact checking, there were agreements signed with EVERY first nation along the pipeline route. These are not the elected leaders of their community who are putting up the blockades. Stop spreading false information!

You also need to explain what the elected leaders jurisdiction is and that these were put in place by Canadian gov’t for reserve lands. And that there are other chiefs of the land. That the land at issue is unceded and there are past court cases related to this land. Not as simple as you try to portray.
