I'm interested in Faith, Belief and Spirituality

My research interests include theology proper (the doctrine of God), the doctrine of scripture, ethics and epistemology (the theory of knowledge). In my early twenties, I began my teaching career as an assistant Theology lecturer before serving as a founding faculty member at a local college.

Based on Oxford Islamic Studies Online,"Sufism is Islamic mysticism, often referred to as the internalization and intensification of Islamic faith and practice. Sufis strive to constantly be aware of God's presence, stressing contemplation over action, spiritual development over legalism, and cultivation of the soul over social interaction. In contrast to the academic exercises of theology and jurisprudence, which depend on reason, Sufism depends on emotion and imagination in the divine-human relationship. Sufism is unrelated to the Sunni/Shii split, schools of jurisprudence, social class, gender, geography, or family connections. It is closely associated with both popular religion and orthodox expressions of Islamic teachings. It has been both opposed and supported by the state."

Sufism is not a sect of Islam. Sufism is the mystical aspect of Islam. There are Sufis in all sects of Islam whether Sunni or Shia.

Sufism is a bit like when Christians sing in the church Christian songs, it's the expression of faith through arts. In Algeria, traditional Sufism is usually through religious songs but it can also be expressed through dancing, poems or other art form.

Rumi was not like the Sufism of today. Sufism in the past used to be known to focus on remembrance of Allah (dhikr) and shunned materialism so we're respected, they still focused on Quran and hadiths and respected scholarships on Islam, they never whirled and twirled. Nowadays Sufism has mutated into even saying Allah is in everything and even rejecting five days prayers, focusing on whirling and twirling. They do not practice Islam as the Prophet Muhammad (saw) practiced it and his followers. Sufism is ruining Rumi works, who was pious man and thinker."

Well said, I agree with you. But the world will choose the easy way of whirling and twirling to avoid fulfilling their purpose in life.

I agree with most of your points, to add some of my own, Sufis were people who were extremely devotional and much of the time in worship and denounced worldly life and chose to live simple lifestyles, something the prophets and companions tried to do, the singing and dancing could be cultural to the regions and not part of religion, however many scholars praised the Sufis for their piety and asceticism, and deep connection and dependence on God.

I think its beautiful way of connecting to God. I find so awful how other people are being so mean we should respect all religions as you expect your religion to be treated.

Rumi's poetry is absolutely wonderful. The idea of reaching God by art and self expression is beautiful.
