The Chinese billionaire and co-founder of the online shopping giant Alibaba has continued to argue for a 9am to 9pm working day, and a six-day week.

Jack Ma's backing for the so-called"996 system" is being hotly debated in the Chinese media.

Last week, Mr Ma wrote that without the system, China's economy was"very likely to lose vitality and impetus".

His stance was backed by fellow tech entrepreneur Richard Liu, the boss of ecommerce giant JD.com.https://www.bbc.com/news/business-47934513?ns_mchannel=social&ns_campaign=bbcnews&ns_source=facebook&ocid=socialflow_facebook&fbclid=IwAR1_FCU_acZ1RV3m9gaoE-fOh63LBpc7Tsr09XCFqHbulewNZ8XINT2bzDk

I don't agree with the 12-hour working day. Spending too much time at work or working too much can lead to serious health problems. I think this is applicable to people who are just starting to build their business but not for employees. Business owners need to allot long hours every day to ensure that the business will be successful, especially at the early stage.

From the guy who probably doesn’t do his own laundry, cook his own food, do his own yard work, shop for his own groceries or clean his own bathroom, etc. When you have enough money to live like a giant toddler, then yes, you can “ work” 12 hours days. Now go play some more while we live in the real world.

While I'm not defending his position, evidence shows that billionaires tend to be overachievers who work 11-15 hours a day every day, usually sacrificing their life and even their family to achieve their dream.

When you are the owner, it is not really sacrifice is it? After all people will remember your name and all the money will mostly go to you.

The article is 1 min read and it describes how hard he worked when starting his business. I don't agree with him either but c'mon.

There's also a big difference when you are running your company as compared to being a cog in the machine. If you're starting your own business you better have that mind set. If you're working shift work for a major corporation that work ethic will only get you as far as they will let you go.

Billionaires encouraging regular folks to work 70 hours a week. So shocked.

He became a billionaire because he works 70 hours a week and not 40. I've never met anyone that works a regular 40 hour job and isn't broke. Period. It's a mindset.

I read The House That Jack Ma Built . He is exceptional . Jack Ma had something ordinary people do not have. Even highly intelligent people cannot count on becoming rich by working 12 hour days. The tradeoff would not be worth it for the vast majority of people. He could not have gotten very far putting in those long hours as a teacher, only as an entrepreneur. He had a creative business mind and was in the right part of China at just the right time. A lot of billionaires and multi millionaires came from that area during that era.
