Jordan Peterson says Kavanaugh should step down

Drop file here to send
Peterson stated before the Senate had confirmed Kavanagh that if appointed he should step down. This was in the context of a discussion with Brett Weinstein where it was stated that both outcomes of the Kavanaugh confirmation process would be unacceptable. Now that Kavanaugh has been appointed, would stepping down be the right thing to do.

This is one of the few times I have strongly disagreed with Peterson, although it appears he doesn't even agree with himself on this matter as he later clarified that he wasn't sure it was the right thing to do. He had also stated very strongly in the past never to cave to a mob.

What does it mean that neither outcome of the confirmation process would be acceptable?

Let's unpack that. Presumably, they mean, if Kavanaugh was approved (which has now occurred) then someone, who has two reasonably 'credible' though uncorroborated sexual allegations against them, is put on the Supreme Court for life. Now clearly there isn't enough evidence to convict him, but as Sam Harris laid out that shouldn't be the standard.

The statistics are that about maybe 10% of sexual assault allegations are false, and 90% are true. So with 2 reasonably credible people making credible sounding allegations (and an additional person making not very believable allegations), the balance of probabilities is that he did make an offence. So where there is so much doubt about someone, that should be disqualifying for such an elevated job and a lifetime appointment.

The other side of the coin, is that this is a hyper-politicized situation. Kavanaugh's appointments swings the balance of the Supreme court to the conservatives and potentially lays the groundwork to overturn Roe v Wade. Politics is not a clean game, and these accusers are linked to Democratic activists, there are all the hallmarks of a political hit job. Furthermore, this is in the context of the regressive left having a pattern of being unreasonable in terms of calling people who are not racist, 'racist', and other social justice warrior lynch mobs of that nature.

The question boils down to whether its more likley Kavanaugh actually committed the some type of sexual assault, and Kristine Blasey Ford is a very useful pawn of the left, or whether she is wholly mistaken / has been pushed into making the accusation. To add extra complexity her memory of the assault is a memory that was recovered in therapy, and these are less reliable.

So its appears impossible to decipher if the assault actually happened. Lets say it 50/50. Should someone that 50/50 committed a sexual assault be put on the Supreme court- No. And should someone who possibly did nothing wrong, be taken down because of uncorroborated allegations and a political lynch mob? Also No- especially as this would encourage a terrible standard of an accusation being enough to damage future nominations to positions of high office.

I suffered a similar assault as Ford. I have no witness, no proof as he never raped me. So does it make the event less significant? The fact that it led me down a path similar to Ford, no its not insignificant to me. When I have shared my story I was told nothing happened so I should shake it off. Nevermind the depression, attempted suicide, unhealthy sexual attitude.. Etc. I don't remember much about the evening because I don't want to and was told to just Forget about it. But the fear, the trauma, of an event that happened 26 years ago is still there. Thanks to the Kavanaugh story and the many that believe it's fake and just a tactic used by the Dems along with the President believing that young (white) men are now under attack have only made my paranoid behavior worse along with severe anxiety. Witness stated nothing happened. I would be curious to see Kavanaugh and Ford's bank statements to see if Kavanaugh paid off witnesses or if Ford is being paid by the Dems. I always say"follow the money". But let's stop belittle an experience that the majority of you have not experienced...

So as you see neither outcome is acceptable by that analysis

The suggestion for Kavanaugh to step down doesn't seem much better to me. I don't think the left will feel they were 'taught a lesson' by him being confirmed, and change their lynch mob mentality.it would appear a victory to them- they had tarnished someone so badly they had to step down.

thumbs up I agree, so as I said this is one of the few times I have really disagreed with Peterson. The problem now is that the left and right are so divided and it has been exaccerbated by the Kavanaugh process, significantly and so, now people are starting to say the phrase 'cold civil war'
