Kombucha jacket lands girl in College of Fashion

Heather Weir's parents heartily support her dreams. She knows this because they allowed her to leave a kombucha mixture reeking of vinegar in their bathtub for 10 weeks so she could make fabric for her HSC fashion project.

The months of stink were worth it; she might not have sat her HSC yet, but the kombucha leather that Ms Weir turned into a biodegradable jacket has already helped land her a position at the prestigious London College of Fashion.

Ms Weir tried it on once before the HSC markers took it away. The only drawback to wearing it out to dinner once it's returned is a problem with waterproofing."If it rained it would blow up to look like kombucha scoby again," she said.

But a solution may be around the corner. Scientists around the world who are also impressed with kombucha leather's possibilities are experimenting with waterproofing."In the future, we could genetically alter the kombucha to be waterproof or look a certain way," she said.

Would you want to wear something like this? What other weird materials have you seen in clothes?

My daughter’s friend did this for the HSC 4 years ago now, she was using the fabric she grew as biodegradable shrouds. Even went to a funeral parlour to research!
