Save the world from 'climate catastrophe'

It's the final call, say scientists, the most extensive warning yet on the risks of rising global temperatures.

Their dramatic report on keeping that rise under 1.5 degrees C says the world is now completely off track, heading instead towards 3C.

Keeping to the preferred target of 1.5C above pre-industrial levels will mean"rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society".

It will be hugely expensive - but the window of opportunity remains open.

Do you think we can do what needs to be done? Is it too late?

Stop packing things in plastic, and stop cutting the Rainforests down, would be a good start.

Stop eating meat and it will end. Reducing meat consumption is another key recommendation in this report, which is going massively under reported.

Stop breeding so many humans would help a lot too.

Wonder how long it will take American corporations (you know the ones who supply all the money for people in congress to deny climate change is real), to realize they are helping to kill their own kids by not doing anything to change the way we do things.

Big business needs to stop packaging in plastic and leaving it to consumers and councils/govt to handle the waste.

The problem is mostly beyond ordinary people's control, though we can vote and make democracy work better, with proportional representation for instance, that's instead of autocratic plutocracy and so on. The burden of responsibility should start at the top for a change.

The thing about plastic is two sided actually. For starters, producing a plastic bag creates thousands of times less CO2 than producing a linen bag. Similarly, packaging stuff in plastic makes it last longer thus again reducing wastefulness, hence reducing CO2 that way. It’s a trade off situation

None of those things are going to happen. There isn't the political will. Time to refocus efforts on adaptation rather than mitigation.

Too many stupid people, too many politicians. We're doomed.

Unless the American politicians think that this will put money in their pockets... it's not going to happen.

The sad part is that when global warming gets really severe many people will still deny it and say it's just the end of the world and therefore God's doing in which case they still won't do anything.
