Definitely, there's no such thing as a free lunch. Besides, it will help them when they move out. Not only rent, but they should do their part of the household chores.

If it's just for a few months then I'm fine letting them stay for free but once they get a job, they should help pay the bills.

I'd feel guilty if I charged my kids for rent. I can provide for them just fine so I don't see why I should charge them.

Why bother? They have enough to worry about.

It gives kids a push towards independence and teaches them about money. It would be good for them to that so they don't become entitled!

No Way! First of all, they didn't ask to be born or to be put on this earth. I always tell my kids that nothing I do for them is ever a favour, it's my responsibility as their parent. I think making them pay rent would be absurd!

Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha! I oath if my parents asked me to pay rent I would tell them they're crazy. Not a chance I would do that

Perhaps not pay rent per say, but maybe either take a portion of their pocket money to contribute to household needs or make them do chores as a way of paying it in kind. I agree with Kendra, it definitely teaches them a sense of independence and responsibility

The earlier you learn how to earn, spend, lend, borrow, and invest, the better off you are. By making your kids pay for living expenses, you teach them very early how to handle money responsibly.

You can't buy love, happiness, peace, or good health. But everything else will cost you. The sooner kids learn this, the better off they will be.

Well of course I wouldn't make them pay rent out of their pocket money but once they're out of school and have a job they should contribute to the household as well.

That is life's reality. It is better to expose them early on. I can't be there to protect them forever.

You can't live somewhere else for free, so why do it with your parents?! I think you should sit down and figure out a fair amount. They would be looking at food, lights, water, and household needs like laundry and groceries.

I lived with my mother my last two years of college. I actually had to make her allow me to pay rent because she does not believe that adult children should pay rent. It was a very small amount to which she would agree, but made me feel as though I was helping her!
