Cal Newport is a computer science professor at Georgetown University. In addition to academic research, he writes about the intersection of technology and society. He’s particularly interested in the impact of new technologies on our ability to perform productive work or lead satisfying lives.

Cal recommends building “fences” around our phones so that we’re not using them mindlessly all day.

Do you agree with this? Can you apply this in your daily life?

Digital life isn't real. Disconnect from everything and try to use social media as little as possible, preferably using it for business or taking care of other errands. Practice mindfulness by living your real life. Take long walks and enjoy the nature, your surroundings, birds chirping, kids playing around. Cherish your time with the family and friends. Put the phone down and start living. You will be amazed how many things we miss out while zoned out. Be in the now.

We should all reduce the amount of social media that we consume.

People's daily drug is not coffee, it's a screen. Thank you for creating the awareness about the detrimental effects our phones and social media have on us. We are becoming better at being in a constant state of distraction. It is time to become mindful about our tech usage, if not we're going to keep scrolling and posting our lives away.

Getting off social media (fb, twitter, ig, snapchat) has given me so much peace. And true mindfulness.

I’m currently taking a social media break, I do this twice a year, Lent and Summertime. It’s very relaxing, and it takes about a week to adjust too, well worth it.

I feel so fortunate to be older and not have grown up with a cell phone or social media.

This is part of a growing response to the negative side effects of our technological/social media age. Just like the organic food movement, there will be a"organic focus" or"organic presence" movement - with the masses consuming the junk food of distraction, while a small high-performing minority consumes the nutrient-rich practices of discipline and focus.

I'm facebook"fasting" every Lent and am thinking about deleting permanently. It's sad and I feel ashamed when my son asks me to not look at my phone. It's time for a change for myself and especially for my son so I can be an example. Thanks again for a great reminder!

This is well and good but when your the only one in your fam that puts the phone down and no one else does your still alone as everyone around you has been lost to social media.

I absolutely love this INTERVIEW. Lots of great points. Being the moment ( no electronic) is one of the most powerful choice we can do and hard but give us so much peace of mind.
