If you have to move things around in order to accomplish a task in your home or at your office or you feel overwhelmed by all your “things,” it’s a strong signal that clutter has prevailed. And it might be stressing you out more than you realize.

“Clutter is an overabundance of possessions that collectively create chaotic and disorderly living spaces,” said Joseph Ferrari, a professor of psychology at DePaul University in Chicago who studies the causes of clutter and its impact on emotional well-being. And a cluttered home, researchers are learning, can be a stressful home.

Do you feel the heaviness of having a cluttered space? What do you do to lessen your clutter?

You think it's stressful addressing your own clutter? Try being the kids you leave all that clutter to who have to deal with it. The guilt and stress of throwing away and giving away your parents' lifetime of stuff is awful. It will put your own in perspective, and you will find the discipline and energy to deal with it so that you don't pass it on as your legacy to your own kids.

How do they know that this isn’t a correlation vs causation thing? Maybe people with cluttered homes have higher cortisol levels because they are stressed out about other things (work, money, relationships, busy schedule, whatever) and that leaves them less energy and motivation for cleaning or the cleaning just isn’t a priority. So the clutter could be a byproduct of the stress, not the other way around.

I started a serious decluttering when I realized that the only"use" I was getting out of the things I was saving was from moving them from place to place....things I was always certain I might need someday. I got rid of it all and have not regretted it since!

You know what stresses me out? Those houses that are so pared down that there's nothing anywhere and you feel like you can't put you're feet up or relax. Thanks but I'll keep my random book on the coffee table and my collections in my bookcase. I'm a person living in a real house not a robot living in a magazine spread and I want my friends and family to be comfortable when they come over

Clutter is having things you may want to keep but have failed to find a permanent home for. You can keep it all if you have the space and it is put away in an organized manner. It is the lack of order that can cause stress. Libraries do not give people stress. The books are in order. If you went the Library and found the books stacked on the floor, on tables in no order the frustration would cause stress.
