It's time to acknowledge the lesser-discussed, but just as poisonous, toxic femininity, writes Meghan Daum.

I'm speechless. I'll just assume this is one of those articles written just to get a reaction. No one can be this blind.

If only half of us are forced to self reflect based on our actions, then that leaves the rest of us mindless and entitled to move on in life without the ounce of empathy we claim some men don't have. We are all responsible for our own self reflection without automatic responses and defenses or excuses. We all need to wake up. This should be a humanity thing, not a men vs woman or other way around thing. When you exclude men from the me too movement to say that it happens to women"more", you aren't thinking about the whole. We don't know facts. We know statistics. Either way, it counts- every single time. You don't know the men in my life who have told me stories, and only me. You don't know my family members who have gone through it, or ancestors. Or anyone else's stories unless you have heard them yourselves. I don't know where everyone else grew up, but women did and do in fact act in these ways where I'm from. If you've never heard of it, and think it's impossible, then consider yourself lucky. But don't by any means consider yourself right. And as someone mentioned above, you have to confront your shadows. The only way to do that is to shine light on them.

Many of the questions posed by this article can be answered by understanding systemic sexism and how it manifests in the US. That’s why it’s flawed to equate toxic masculinity with toxic femininity, which doesn’t exist as the previous term is about social dominance and not merely being manipulative or narcissistic.

Toxic masculinity in psychology is about maintaining social dominance, and, therefore, there is no feminine counterpart.

Isn’t ‘toxic femininity’ created by media? I personally haven’t met it in real life, and I do know a ton of feminists. ✌️

What? Toxic femininity doesn't exist. Men do awful things to prove their masculinity, however women do not do the same to prove their femininity.

I’ve never done any of those things. Those are things an awful person does. Whether they are male or female.

Toxic humanity wouldn't be of any concern if parents (any gender) raised their children (any gender) to be decent human beings. Nothing compares to teaching a child to value themselves and others as equals. Toxicity not included.

I’m a feminist. I also grew up in a family with a mother who exhibited these toxic traits, and see my little brother experiencing these issues too.

The point is that we can’t just write a blank check on believing all women about everything they say just because women are oppressed by the patriarchy. Women are people, and people can be toxic. Women are still responsible for their actions, regardless of the power dynamics at play.

Lol what youre describing as “toxic femininity” is what feminists call Patriarchy. Thank you for bringing nothing new to the table while finding another way to label women.... I suggest reading a bit of critical writing on feminism to help you with this little pickle you got yourself in.
