Wow, I've actually thought that such thing already works in America. Cause here in Prague we have such therapists in high schools. I thought it came from the USA... Well, I have never visited one, but I know quiet some people whom the therapist helped.

Having teachers that know their job and interact with you is important as well. By junior high school my parents had separated. My father left the family and my mom who hadn’t worked when I was in elementary school became the sole support for 3 teenaged girl and a young son. We were financially devastated. I was always a great student but a bully target. My teachers encouraged me. They gave me the pat on the back and good job. And when I was 14 it was my homeroom teacher who got me my first job as a teachers assistant in a science classroom. I hadn’t taken school pictures in 2 years because of the $16 fee. Having my own money encouraged me to keep studying even if the kids teased me. It’s not just the troubled kids, being a kid is just hard. What parents don’t/can’t catch good teachers, counselors, and case workers can.

Mental health services are essential, I would like to see a couple of police officers as well. I didn't think that was something I wanted to see until there was a threat at my children's schools with only once officer between them. I was terrified and kept them home bc I didn't believe one officer could keep them safe. More therapist in schools is a very effective way to prevent school violence, and trained, brave police officers are what we depend on during an occurrence of school violence. I wish like hell children shooting other children weren't spreading like wild fire, but since it is, we must take action. Mental health care should not only be readily available to children in schools, but also should be affordable to everyone in our communities. I believe it would cut down on violence and many other criminal offences, as well as improve the quality of life for many others.

How about improve the curriculum to challenge their minds instead of assuming they can't think kids are inherently brilliant until they prove otherwise

Agreed. Let’s also encourage parents to do their jobs! If the “mental health” claim of 1 in 5 is accurate, where do you think those mental issues are coming from? It isn’t the school.

I think one thing people are overlooking is that generally there aren't random mass shootings in inner city schools. The shootings that happen in schools where students struggle with poverty are generally deliberate and about misplaced anger not mental illness. A thousand therapists won't do anything against a pissed off gang member with a gun.

Isn't there an argument to be had on why kids need so much more psychological attention/help today? Far more than decades past, is life becoming more difficult or are children becoming more mentally weak? Think about that one Mr Vic Mensa

These kids need a spiritual presence in their lives. Not man made religion but spirituality. Meditation, bio feedback, yoga, spiritual guidance and the like. They are mentally conflicted and spiritually bankrupted. They see the hypocrisy of world's religious laws."These people perish because of the lack of knowledge" of who they truly are. They are not just depositories of contradictrial information and the convoluted notions about the need for money and power. They are simple spiritual beings having a overrated physical experience and as long as the expectations are to disregard our spiritual self we will continue this ever increasing slide down this precipice of self destruction.

This is what I've been saying since Sandy Hook. No one remembers the wise school massacre in this country's history. A very mentally unstable man in Bath Twp, Michigan 1927. He did have a gun but most the deaths were in the school. While Timothy McVeigh didn't go to a school he didn't use a gun.

Actually forcing children into therapy tends to make issues worse... how about the PARENTS go to counselling and therapy... it starts at home people. the left is trying to get rid of family values and they wonder why these kids are insane criminals.

Most all of these remarks are very sensible. They are written with thought and intelligence. Unfortunately, there are always going to be dysfunctional families, poverty, bullying and children that have emotional problems ... that is why there should be counselors at every school, especially with all the issues of today. I hate to think of
the many schools that probably do not even have counselors that are professionally trained to deal with these children. I am sure most are not. Another thing that should change. We have billions we give to other countries, but we are so lacking in the care of our own. Thanks to our politicians.
