A research has shown that diverse groups are more productive in a wide range of applications. Diversity is becoming a strategic imperative for schools, firms and other types of institutions. It may be good politics and good PR and, depending on an individual’s commitment to racial and gender equity, good for the soul. We should think of our differences as forms of talent. To leverage that talent requires patience and practice.

When I was younger, I handled a team of 10 with the oldest being 55 years old and youngest 21, a fresh college graduate. It was difficult having both ends of the spectrum. Both the oldest and youngest didn't like to follow the company rules. They reasoned out that they can get things done faster their way. Eventually, we had to let them go. It is one thing that the company embraces diversity, it is another thing if the employees don't cooperate. Too bad, both were actually very skilled.

I like working with a diverse team. Compared to a non-diversified team, I get more innovative solutions. Though my team meetings would always be chaotic and last for a longer period of time, the results I get is far better.

What worked for our company is continued dialogue and regular teambuilding activities. Our company invests a lot in these two activities. Our teambuilding activities were are varied, not the usual eating and drinking sessions. The company really carefully plans the activities so that everyone can understand each others' differences.

The more varying points of view managers have access to, the more creative their teams will be in solving age-old and newborn dilemmas. There's greater innovation and creativity that springs from diverse points of view.

If you put together a diverse group of five people and offer them the same problem, you might surprised the solutions that are offered. Experience influences the lens through which each individual sees the world.
