Aimee explains why she won't be changing her last name if she ever gets married. Not everyone wants to follow tradition and that's ok!https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p06zhy3p

We really have different perspectives when it comes to almost everything. If a person doesn't want to change her name, I'll respect that. If you'll follow the tradition of carrying the name of your husband after your marriage, it's also not an issue. It's a matter of respecting each other's differences.

Would you change your name or not? And why?

It is actually an English tradition that Scotland adopted only recently, 100 years or so. Prior to this women did not change their names. If you look at old graves you will see women with their maiden names followed by ‘wife of...husband’s name’ etc. Also In court processes married women will still be referred to as ‘Jane Smith or Jones’ where they adopt the married name. So older Scottish tradition favours no change of name.

I felt the same way, until I met my husband. Then I wanted to give all of me to him- including taking his last name. It didn't take any of my strength or independence away, but it does give me butterflies to know that I'm Mrs. Fowler. I'm his thoroughly and he is mine. He wanted to share every part of himself with me which included giving me a connection to generations. Names are powerful and have the power to span through years to tie people together with pride. However, I feel that each is free to, and should, choose for themselves what they believe to be best for their situation.

I could not agree more. We view things differently. And that's what makes us unique.

When I got married, changing my name wasn't something I thought about and he wasn't bothered at all so for the longest time I didn't. Then as time went on I began to hyphenate our names. Almost 2 years later, I've decided to change it to my husband's name after all. Just because you don't want to initially, doesn't mean you won't change your mind later. It doesn't make me any less independent and I'm certainly not doing it because he was pressuring me into it.
Another big reason for not changing straight away was the hassle of having to contact banks, change passports and drivers licenses, etc.

When I marry my boyfriend if I hyphenate my name, my initials will be a bad hat and shoulder pads away from sounding like a character in a Latino soap opera.

Change it. Cool. Don't change it. Cool. Pick a new one together. Cool. Hyphenate. Cool. Do something not on this list. Cool. It's your life, it's not going to actually hurt anybody so ignore everybody else and you do you.
