You’re Never Going to Be “Caught Up” at Work

Drop file here to send
Most people I know have a to-do list so long that it’s not clear that there’s an end to it. Some tasks, even quite important ones, linger unfinished for a long time, and it’s easy to start feeling guilty or ashamed about what you have not yet completed.

People experience guilt and its close cousin shame when they have done something wrong. Guilt is focused internally on the behavior someone has committed, while shame tends to involve feeling like you are a bad person, particularly in the context of bad behaviors that have become public knowledge.

The fundamental question is whether these feelings are a good thing. To answer that, it’s worth quoting the movie Bridge of Spies. Mark Rylance plays the spy Rudolf Abel. He’s asked at one point whether he is worried, and he responds, “Would it help?”

In this case, the answer is, “It depends.” https://hbr.org/2018/07/youre-never-going-to-be-caught-up-at-work-stop-feeling-guilty-about-it?utm_campaign=hbr&utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&fbclid=IwAR1BXUhp-j5h-HD3gTmNpHAjmY-SLhwIcSt-A-uTJtDzgQwLL3nqJXKotIc

We all have those times at our job where we feel like it's just. too. much. The workload gets the better of you and you just can't think of any better way to cope with it other than throwing all your papers (or your computer) on the floor - right?!

Work will still be waiting tomorrow, but a micromanaging-kind-of-boss always ask you to complete today because for them, tomorrow is end of the world

Once you have kids you have to admit work is a piece of pie face with tears of joy

About five years ago I found myself working day, night and weekend. I suddenly decided to stop. And amazingly, nothing with my overall success changed.

Some work jobs are designed to get caught up everyday. And then it starts over again the next day. The cool thing about that type of job is that you don't take it home with you.

The only time the flow stops coming: is vacation. So take more vacations it is good for all the people involved in the process.

I'm caught up every day that I work. I work on things that need done that day and anything that isn't due yet can wait. That's called being caught up

The brutal answer is ‘leave or get up to speed’. You only need to contemplate handing in your notice if you feel that you are totally unsuited to the job.
