Denver Cut Ties With For-Profit Prison Companies
The Denver City Council cut ties with the country’s two biggest private prison companies on Tuesday. Eight of the 12 council members voted against two resolutions that would have renewed contracts with CoreCivic and GEO Group, which together run six halfway houses in the area. CoreCivic acquired the facilities in 2017, and GEO Group in 2018. The contracts were worth $10 million. https://www.huffpost.com/entry/denver-for-profit-prisons_n_5d4c5224e4b0066eb70e7549?utm_campaign=hp_fb_pages&utm_source=main_fb&utm_medium=facebook&ncid=fcbklnkushpmg00000063§ion=politics&fbclid=IwAR0y_ghSzMaVVCeU4KGNfiaA0DEQNp60WGUp9J-ggpQN_0AxfN2CfFPvuMI

Finland has one of the most flexible work cultures
Every morning, waves of people commute into the world’s cities and return home at the end of the day. The chance to do things differently is an elusive dream for many. But in Finland, it’s reality. The country has been at the forefront of flexible working for years. Since the mid-90s, the Working Hours Act has empowered Finns to adjust their working day by starting or finishing up to three hours earlier or later.https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2019/08/finland-s-doing-something-cool-with-flexible-working?utm_source=Facebook%20Videos&utm_medium=Facebook%20Videos&utm_campaign=Facebook%20Video%20Blogs&fbclid=IwAR1wqCDFTaQOhYcMoZBIv1nFmHY7NWfjDnECItQsmDkY2xr9n5iw2va-sJo

DeVos's School Choice Program Enable Corruption...
Yesterday, the former education secretary of Puerto Rico, Julia Keleher, returned to the island to stand trial after being arrested by the FBI on July 10th on fraud charges. Specifically, she and a government official in the insurance sector have been charged with using their government positions and connections to misdirect federal funding and award bloated, fraudulent contracts to their personal connections (several of whom were also arrested on the 10th). Some see this as vindication for the Trump administration, which has cited potential misuse of funds as one of their reasons for repeatedly trying to hold back much-needed funds, most recently funding for food stamps. However, this alleged fraud actually has more to do with policies of reducing public school funding in favor of private and charter schools, a shift made popular by Education Secretary Betsy DeVos. https://www.forbes.com/sites/christopherrim/2019/07/17/did-betsy-devoss-school-choice-program-enable-puerto-ricos-corruption-scandal/?utm_source=FACEBOOK&utm_medium=social&utm_term=Valerie%2F&fbclid=IwAR1XXTLBmfln5vXQnpGiwSSBeTl8Nc5EdAKJlxMNR1_zkPsHf_Oc-4VRo5c#2ca7d5295526
Trump Made Another Ugly Attack On Democratic Women
It didn’t receive a rebuke from the House, but President Donald Trump did something else this week, apart from his racist tweets against a quartet of Democratic congresswomen, that many saw as ugly and contrary to American values. Addressing the furor at a press conference on Monday, Trump hurled another line of attack against the four lawmakers, accusing them of “hating” the United States and suggesting they leave the country if they’re not happy here.https://www.huffpost.com/entry/trump-squad-racist_n_5d2f3441e4b085eda5a54e6e?section=politics&utm_source=main_fb&utm_campaign=hp_fb_pages&ncid=fcbklnkushpmg00000063&utm_medium=facebook&fbclid=IwAR156E91fQjiC_33HHwIS0YviucDf0UFMKpO2k8cvZE8neSqENJmLO_onjc
Pence: Border Facility Conditions Are Unacceptable
Vice President Mike Pence saw the overcrowded conditions facing migrant adults and children in Customs and Border Protection custody firsthand Friday, becoming the highest-ranking member of the Trump administration to visit two federal detention centers in Texas ahead of controversial Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids targeting undocumented immigrants this weekend. "To be honest with you, I was not surprised by what we saw," Pence told reporters Friday, citing the humanitarian crisis and congestion. "This crisis is real, the time for action is now."https://edition.cnn.com/2019/07/12/politics/mike-pence-border-immigration/index.html?utm_source=fbCNN&utm_term=link&utm_content=2019-07-13T14%3A42%3A30&utm_medium=social&fbclid=IwAR3_cC3vFQWGvGBVRDBO2tsAbJ8ohBQOoizJWkw1xmCZeUAHvEMX2lJ4WNI
